There are plenty of great Assassin's Creed protagonists, but Black Flag's Edward Kenway is the very best because he doesn't care for any of the lore.

Edward Kenway himself, actor Matt Ryan, was on hand at IGN Live to discuss Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag Resynced, a remake of 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Asked about what made Black Flag make such an impression, Ryan replied, "Who doesn’t love pirates? And pirates and assassins? ...What can you say?"
