Exit: A Biodelic Adventure

HD-2D, the retro-cool art style spearheaded by Square Enix and imitated by many others, was originally built as a way to pay homage to classic Super NES-era role-playing games while also making them look distinctly modern. And to that end, it's been used exclusively for RPGs like the Octopath Traveler series and the Live A Live remake. The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, then, represents the next big evolution of this concept, showing that the art style can just as easily apply to other classic genres--this time, the top-down action-adventure game.I played about two hours of The Ad

In about 16 minutes of hands-on time with Bad Magpie, I torched flowers, added even more chaos to the mess humans left behind with a sonic bird call, and thoroughly disgruntled some innocent mice. Bad Magpie is instantly charming, and from what I played, has great puzzles to go with its chaos.

If you grew up playing NES games, Game Boy games, or similar games from that era — if you remember spending an entire afternoon stuck on a single screen until you figured out the trick to moving forward — Mina the Hollower is aimed squarely at you. I've still got plenty of questions about the back half of this thing, but after several hours with the early game, I'm fully hooked and am prepared to blast through the rest without stopping to ask when it drops on all platforms on May 29.
