First Moon of Mercury

In an age where single-player first-person shooters are slowly going extinct because they only make money for their publisher once while multiplayer live-service shooters vie for our time and attention on a daily basis (and often contain lots of bullsh*t, like microtransactions and/or drawn-out gameplay loops), Metro 2039’s single-player-only craftsmanship and attention to detail after my first few hours with it have me already prepared to call it my favorite first-person shooter in a long time.

While I can definitely see it working well solo, playing with two other players in real time is where 1001 Threads of Mizan really shines. There were no multiplayer quick time events or big flashy mid-fight cutscenes that triggered when everyone did a specific thing, but there were definitely moments where all three of us needed to attack a single weak point, or work together to defeat various obstacles at once in different areas during the boss fight. I'm very interested to see how this fusion of single-player and co-op works throughout the game.

Showa American Story succeeds in crafting an unforgettable, eccentric B-movie world. However, its deliberate jank and niche style mean its general polish still lags behind other modern AAA action games at this point. The sheer density of cultural parodies is impressive, but whether the game can sustain this tone over a dozens-of-hours-long campaign without exhausting players remains to be seen. Coupled with its current shortcomings in combat depth and mechanical feel, Showa American Story is shaping up to be an incredibly unique, highly flawed, yet undeniably fascinating ride.

After about 10 hours with the Gears E-Day multiplayer beta, Xbox's long-time shooter series is making some smart gameplay changes.

Stalker 2 has been out for nearly two years, and if you've been itching to jump back into the post-apocalyptic hellscape, you'll have a great reason to do so. The game's first expansion, Stalker 2: Cost of Hope, releases in just a few weeks across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Cost of Hope puts you back in control of Stalker 2 protagonist Skif, with the character following a "mysterious PDA signal" as the dangerous Zone's Duty and Freedom factions come into conflict.
