Gears of War: E-Day may be rewinding the clock to create a Marcus and Dom prequel that's pure nostalgia bait, but its smart approach to gameplay design makes it much more interesting than that.

It's been a long time since Gears of War creator and original designer Cliff Bleszinski was guiding the franchise, but he eagerly watched the premiere of new footage of the latest game, Gears of War: E-Day, during the Xbox Games Showcase. And like a proud father, Bleszinski shared his enthusiastic response to what he saw. "Loved the struggle with that one Locust, but it's weird how the other ones (not the 'naked' ones) went down so easy," wrote Bleszinski on X. Not only were my fears of the roguelite loop unfounded, but the Burnout roots baked into developer Fuse Games’s DNA was joyously evident in every moment I spent on the track with Star Wars: Galactic Racer. And the times I wasn’t going hundreds of miles per hour when I was on foot did a great job of further Star Wars-ifying my experience. I’m incredibly optimistic about what I’ve seen from this long overdue spiritual successor to Episode 1: Pod Racer, and I can’t wait to play more of it.

One of the biggest problems with the Switch 2 isn't availability or a looming price hike, but the platform's online marketplace. What should be a highlight reel of Nintendo exclusives, outstanding third-party titles, and rising indie stars is instead an eShop full of slop drops, and Dead Gears: Space of War is indicative of this problem. Scheduled to launch on May 29, the game's key art combines an on-the-nose use of the Cog symbol from Gears of War with the font of Dead Space, all positioned above what is likely an AI-generated image.The game's trailer doesn't inspire much confidence either,

The next Gears of War game, Gears of War: E-Day, has been confirmed as an Xbox console exclusive, as shared during the Xbox Games Showcase. According to Jeff Grubb, who has accurately reported on numerous unannounced games industry news over the years, "Gears of War: E-Day was going to be on PS5--it's not anymore. That just happened. That's a decision that just got made."
