Pinball FX2: Marvel Pinball

If Insomniac has proved anything over the last eight years, it’s that they know how to make a hell of a superhero game. Marvel's Spider-Man remains one of the PlayStation 4’s defining action games and a shining example of open-world design, as are both of its follow-ups. Now they’re looking to replicate that magic with Marvel's Wolverine, albeit this time as a traditional linear AAA action game. I got to play about two and half hours at a recent preview event, and while my impressions are mostly glowingly positive, I did come away with a few questions and concerns.

I've always thought there were a few characters out there who were the perfect match for video games. Batman is always my classic example: he beats up bad guys, does stealth takedowns, and has a built-in arsenal of gadgets that can be conveniently designed for any design obstacle; he has a cool car and cape for driving and/or gliding around an open world, and he has preternatural detective sensibilities to help him solve environmental puzzles - or, I dunno, press R3 to see where to go next. Performance anxiety.

Whenever I see the words "spiritual successor" attached to any new game, I immediately get concerned. You set a bar in the minds of old fans that can prove impossible to reach. This is not the next great Marvel vs Capcom game. It's not a Marvel vs Capcom game at all, in fact. It is, however, the best tag fighter I've played in years. Read more
