Who would have thought it, but the seventh movie in the Despicable Me franchise may be the best one yet, as Minions & Monsters uses those little banana-loving dudes to make an ode to early Hollywood and to the power of cinema and storytelling.

Better than any other aspect of the new Masters of the Universe movie, Skeletor’s portrayal finds the right balance between goofy and serious, with the villain winding up as the funniest character while never taking away from his threat level.

Minions & Monsters is now available on PVOD services like Prime Video. The third Minions film is landing on digital just over 40 days after it was first released in theaters. The latest movie from Illumination Studios grossed over $473 globally on a reportedly modest budget of $85 million, placing it narrowly in the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year so far. While it didn’t quite match the heights of Despicable Me 4 at the box office, Minions & Monsters does currently sit as one of the best-reviewed movies in Illumination’s franchise.
