The rumors about a new God of War game proved to be true during Sony's latest State of Play event. That's why the reveal of God of War Laufey wasn't unexpected. What was a surprise was its cubic, talking, gelatin-like companion character, Phranque (as voiced by The Boys' Jack Quaid), is the character who turned out to be the breakout star of State of Play. Sony’s big State of Play showstopper was God of War Laufey, the next game in the God of War series from Sony Santa Monica due out exclusively on PS5.

As the summer gaming season starts to heat up, Sony has announced a new State of Play Showcase for June 2 at 2 PM PT / 5 PM ET.This will be one of the bigger State of Play livestreams of the year, clocking in at 60 minutes and kicking off with a new look at Insomniac's upcoming Wolverine game alongside "updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals" from other studios across the world. As rumored, today's State of Play broadcast included the official announcement of a new God of War game. This game does not star Kratos, however. Faye looks to be the lead character in the newly announced God of War game. Santa Monica is also working on a remake of the original God of War trilogy. A live-action TV adaptation is also in the works with Amazon Prime Video, with production on the series now underway. A live-service God of War game, however, was reportedly canceled in 2025..
